Theosophy
A philosophical system that teaches that one gain knowledge of transcendent reality through revelation or through the practice of the occult tradition. The term theosophy comes from the Greek words theos, “god,” and Sophia, “wisdom.” As practiced I modern times, theosophy claims that all religions stem from the same roots of ancient wisdom, repeating myths and symbols, and that study of these secrets will lead to truth and spiritual oneness.

The Theosophy Society is an international, nonsectarian, nonpolitical and no dogmatic organization founded in New York City in 1875 by Madame Helene Petrovna Blavatsky, AKA HPB, a Russian born mystic; Colonel Henry Steel Olcott, an American attorney and government official; and William Q. Judge, a judge (no really), among others.

According to HPB theosophy dates back to the third century A.D. Ammonius Saccas and his disciples in Eclectic theosophy saw that all religions shared three major themes:

(1) Belief in one Supreme, Absolute deity as the source of All. This is true even of pantheistic religions. There can be Only one!
(2) Human’s immortal nature is a radiation from the deity.
(3) By becoming one with the source, one could receive the divine secrets. “Be One with the Source Luke!”

Such is the nature of theurgy or divine work.

It is believed that earlier civilizations, such as the Greeks and Egyptians understood the esoteric far better than those of modern societies, and that their teachers were proficient in the occult arts. These masters or “mahatmas,” as they are called in India, lived on through the centuries in various incarnations, guarding their knowledge and teaching it only to those that were worthy. It was believed that most of these masters reside in remote regions of Eastern Asia, Tibet, and Mongolia forming the Brotherhood of Adepts. The concept of such brotherhoods exists in numerous occult traditions.

The real founders of the Theosophy society were identified as Kuthumi, Lal Singh, and Morya. Other masters important to the society were Ilarion, a Greek and Djwal Kul, who carriedmessages between the masters.

In The Secret Doctrine a great evolutionary plan was conceived in which divine potential is unfolded through orderly progression, moving down from spirit to matter and back up again. While science sees evolution as the product of external forces and factors, theosophy views it as the urge to release the potential of consciousness, which becomes more and more defined. Humans are the masterpiece of evolution and all nature tends toward evolving the human potential. The evolutionary scheme divides stages into Chains, Rounds, and Races each of which has its own evolutionary cycle. With reincarnation and Karma at its base.
